Are you finding yourself exhausted by late morning? Skipping breakfast can cause spikes
and dips in blood sugar, especially if you begin your morning with a cup of coffee on an empty stomach. This can leave you with cravings, fatigue, brain fog and irritability, to name
a few of the possible effects. It can also induce an adrenal stress response in the body, putting you into a fight, flight or freeze state and adding a layer of chronic strain to every system.
Your best bet is to combine a protein, a fat and a complex carbohydrate in every meal. This helps your body maintain a stable blood sugar level and keep you fueled consistently throughout the day.
Examples of protein-rich breakfast foods:
Eggs
Greek yogurt
Cottage cheese
Peanut butter
Quinoa
Whole-grain toast
Examples of fat-rich breakfast foods:
Nuts
Seeds (especially pumpkin, sunflower or chia seeds)
Avocados
Cheese
Examples of breakfast foods with complex carbohydrates
Oats
Sprouted bread
Mangoes
Apples
Blueberries
Bananas
Some of these foods actually fall into more than one category. For example, nuts contain both fat and protein, and yogurt grants a healthy balance of all three vital components.
If you refuse to start your day with anything but a jolt of java—avoid sugar and add something else to your cup. A tablespoon of collagen powder added to coffee is one great way to get protein into your body to power you through the day.
